Three Things to Watch at COP23

COP23 graphic

Hundreds of leaders from government and business are gathering in Bonn, Germany, for COP23, the UN’s annual climate change conference.

Running through November 17, the conference is focused on how to implement the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to below two degrees Celsius.

Here are three things we’re watching at COP23:

  1. U.S. Out…or In? President Trump announced in June that he would pull the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement. Since then, American states and businesses have come out in full force to support the agreement and climate action. What will their message be at COP23, and can they collectively meet the goals set out for the U.S. in the Paris Agreement?

  1. Canada’s Eye on the Clean Economy Prize: Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, will lead the charge for Canada at COP23. The Canadian delegation is all in on doing what it takes to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – and on capitalizing on the opportunities in the clean economy. How will Canada and others take advantage of the economic opportunity offered by the global market shift toward cleaner growth?

  1. From “What” to “How”: The Paris Agreement sets out the “what” but not the “how.” How will the global community meet the carbon reduction goals in the agreement? What will states, provinces, cities and businesses do to contribute? What kind of innovation and investment will it take to deliver? How will we set new and more ambitious goals after 2020?
