As Director of Zero Carbon Building, Michael oversees the world’s first zero-carbon building standard. Michael’s work builds momentum for CAGBC’s innovative made-in-Canada framework, helping members recognize how their journey toward zero-carbon buildings is an integral part of Canada’s national climate commitments. Michael leads the Zero Carbon Steering Committee to advance the Design and Performance standards, ensuring they remain progressive and accessible, manages customer inquiries, and shines a light on new decarbonization strategies across the value chain of green buildings. Michael has twelve years of experience decarbonizing the built environment. He has worked on deep energy retrofits in healthcare, municipalities, and universities, built over 50 MW of renewable energy projects across Canada and the US, contributed toward GHG reduction roadmaps for over 30M sqft, and implemented vehicle-to-grid technology pilot projects. He has a background in Earth Systems Science with a focus on Biochemistry, and a Master’s in the Environment and Natural Resources that focused on utility-scale battery energy storage in Iceland.
