Annabel Soutar was born and raised in Montreal. She studied theater at Princeton University, earning a degree in directing and playwriting. Under the direction of Emily Mann, renowned playwright and director of the renowned McCarter Theatre in New Jersey, she developed her documentary approach to theater.
Since 1995, she has applied this approach to the plays she produces in Montreal: November, 2000 Questions, Santé, Import/Export, Sexy béton, Seeds, The Watershed and Fredy. She also acted as dramaturge for Christine Beaulieu’s J’aime Hydro, François Grisé’s Tout inclus, Maude Laurendeau’s Rose et la machine, and Marie-Joanne Boucher and Jean-Marc Dalphond’s Projet Polytechnique.
Annabel Soutar is the artistic director of the company Porte Parole, which contributes to the promotion of documentary theater. To date, she has created and produced fourteen documentary plays on such ambitious subjects as health, financial bubbles, globalization and immigration.
