Over the past two decades, economic growth has lifted more than 660 million people out of poverty. Approaching related issues through a global lens, foremost speakers will look at how financial inclusion, the way we tax, regulate, and encourage fiscal reform can have a positive impact from a social and environmental perspective. This applicable session will also share a practical toolbox on the role of innovation in improving social, economic, and environmental prosperity.

Topic Speakers

Scott Vaughan is IISD President. He has been Canada’s Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development; Director, Department of Sustainable Development, Organization of American States (OAS); Visiting Scholar, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Head of Economics, NAFTA Environment Commission; and Counsellor, World Trade Organization (WTO).

At the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Vaughan initiated the UNEP Finance Initiative and UNEP’s work on trade and environment. Early in his career, he worked at the head office of the Royal Bank Financial Group. Vaughan holds post-graduate degrees from the London School of Economics, University of Edinburgh and Dalhousie University, and an undergraduate degree from Mount Allison University.

Recent and current affiliations include Chair of the Board of IISD Experimental Lakes Area; co-chair of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment (CCICED) Special Study; Associate Editor, Chinese Journal of Urban and Environment Studies (CJUES); co-convener of the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) Task Force on Trade and Natural Resources; member of Future Earth Engagement Committee; member of UNEP International Advisory Council for the Advancement of Justice, Governance and Law for Environmental Sustainability; member of the Environmental Leadership Council, Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce.
