Gabe Wing

Director of Environmental Health & Safety, Herman Miller, USA

Gabe Wing is responsible for managing Herman Miller's sustainability efforts including sustainable product design, environmental footprint reduction and safety.  Incorporating sustainability as an essential element of the management strategy, the goal of the team is help create a better world.

Gabe has played an important role in developing the environmental policies of Herman Miller since he joined the company in 2001. Among his contributions is the integration of sustainable design principles into Herman Miller's innovation process.  Today, all new products and processes are designed using Design for the Environment protocols based on Cradle to Cradle thinking and life cycle assessment. 

Gabe also works closely with key material suppliers to support the development of innovative products that maximize positive contributions to people and the planet.  In addition, he leads CEU-accredited training sessions for architects, designers, and engineers on the principles of sustainable product design. 

Gabe received a Bachelor's of Science from University of Michigan and a Master's of Science from Michigan State University, both degrees in Chemical Engineering. Prior to Herman Miller, Gabe's professional background included polymer process engineering, advanced material development and managing a research laboratory.

From 2002 to 2010, Gabe served as a member of the Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Group to the U.S. Green Building Council. Gabe was appointed to Michigan's Green Chemistry Roundtable in 2008, a group charged with the promotion of green chemistry for sustainable economic development and protection of public health. As a member of the University of Michigan Business School's Erb Advisory Board, Gabe advises on curriculum to help develop tomorrow's leaders and create a more sustainable future. Additionally, he serves as the vice-president for a local non-profit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
