Fiona Cousins

Global Digital Automation Leader and Director, Arup Group Board

Fiona Cousins leads the sustainability team in the New York office of Arup, is one of the leaders of the building engineering team, directs technical investments for Arup’s Americas Region, and is a member of the Arup Americas Board.

Fiona has a background as a mechanical engineer and has spent much of her career engaged in HVAC design, with an area of specialization in thermal comfort and energy efficiency. She developed a strong interest in the broader sustainability impact of the built environment during the 1990s and has been working since then to incorporate sustainability into her projects. Sustainable design frequently requires interdisciplinary collaboration and managing teams to achieve break-through results and this has been the other main theme of her career.

Fiona has extensive project experience, having worked for both corporate and institutional clients on a wide variety of building, planning and sustainability projects including offices, trading floors, laboratories, libraries, performing art centers, airports and campuses.

She is LEED Fellow, and has served as both Manager and Director for a number of projects that are pursuing the highest levels of LEED goals. She was the chair of the New York Chapter of the USGBC, Urban Green Council, and is currently the chair-elect of the board of USGBC.

She is a frequent presenter on transformative sustainable building design and has presented at EnvironDesign, Earthday New York, Green Building Challenge, GreenBuild, Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and the Architectural Record Innovation Conference. She has also lectured extensively at Universities around the US.
