Major international bodies, including the IEA and IPCC, acknowledge much of the world will not be able to meet their emissions reduction targets without carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). The circular economy offers businesses the opportunity to realize a competitive advantage in a rapidly changing global and domestic market. The World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) in Toronto (September-October 2020) is an unprecedented opportunity for Canadian businesses, policy-makers, investors, and other stakeholders to engage with circular economy experts and leaders across all industries and sectors from more than 60 countries. In partnership with the Circular Economy Leadership Coalition, the half-day Circular Economy Advance session at GLOBE 2020 will be an important stepping stone to the WCEF and will work to surface vital issues of tension, tackle barriers, and explore opportunities by industry/sector that will come from a transition to a more circular economy in Canada. The deployment of new technology, efficient logistics, modal shiftthese are all outcomes that are enabled through coordinated action across the private and public sectors. With much of our current system reliant on hydrocarbon energy, it is prudent to explore how we can best leverage the embedded value of that infrastructure, talent and investment to accelerate and amplify other transformation activities. Having a clearly articulated definition of hydrocarbons’ role in the energy system that the future requires of us will support decisions on optimal pathways for transformation. Participants will explore the hydrocarbon value web through the principles of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, energy transition, backcasting, and future fitness. We will (1) explore the energy transformation within the context of Canada’s global position as an energy producer, and (2) build a clearer understanding of pathways to align the hydrocarbon industry with circular economic and sustainability principles. Join the Social Purpose Institute, partners and allies for a dynamic, interactive, fun, inspiring, and impactful session where you will play a role in scaling up the social purpose business movement in Canada and beyond, while engaging with peers and making valuable connections in the social purpose arena. In this session, we will discover four key leverage points that can be advanced over the next two years and reported on at GLOBE 2022. We’ll begin by voting on and prioritizing social purpose momentum building ideas in a Dragon’s Den pitch competition format.
