Eldon Weasel Child was born and raised in Siksika, where Blackfoot was his first language spoken. He began singing powwow music at the age of 6 years old and became a lead singer at 8 years old with a group made up of family and friends. He is actively involved in the Blackfoot cultural way of life. He has been the lead singer of Blackfoot Crossing since 1980, winning World Class Singing Championships in 1987 among other honours. Eldon was given the right to “speak for the people” in 1982 from former lifetime Chief Leo PrettyYoungMan and Elder Jimmy ManyBears. He has served as MC and camp announcer since.
Eldon has served on several boards, committees and tribunals for 35 years, and served 22 years as an elected member of Siksika Council. He received the Alberta Aboriginal Leadership Award in 2003. Eldon is a culture, language and history teacher with Old Sun Community College, Blackfeet Community College and several other organizations.
He is a country recording artist and has performed and recorded at various venues throughout North America, including Nashville Tennessee. He is a former member of the Canadian Pro Rodeo Association, competing in the wild horse race event from 1995 to 1999, and has been a rodeo announcer for Siksika rodeos and the IRCA since 1989.
