Hon. Ranj Pillai was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the general election for the 34th Legislative Assembly on November 7, 2016. Mr. Pillai was appointed to the Executive Council of Yukon on December 3, 2016. He is currently Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, Minister of Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Yukon Development Corporation and the Yukon Energy Corporation.
Mr. Pillai previously sat as a Whitehorse City Councillor from 2009 to 2012. While on council he helped bring Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada to Whitehorse and was awarded the 2011 Yukon Tourism Champion Award for his efforts. He spearheaded the first anti-racism and discrimination bylaw North of 60.
Mr. Pillai was previously the executive director of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations Government, has held senior roles with Northern Vision Development and Yukon College, and is a former member of the Governor General’s Leadership Conference. Post conference, he was elected to be Governor General of Canada’s Leadership Conference board of directors. He has also held previous roles with numerous First Nation Development Corporations and held senior leadership roles with a number of publicly traded resource companies.
